Cameroon: Prime Minister Chief Dr Jospeh Dion Ngute has ordered an investigation into the management of funds aimed at fighting coronavirus
The decision to investigate the management of the funds come after a series of scandals rocked social media about the management of COVID-19 funds
Sources tell TeboPost the investigations will not be limited to finances and will be conducted by an external agency.
Public health minister Dr Malachie had come under fire recently over 4000 bags of rice donated by ORCA supermarket to help feed Cameroonians during lockdown back in March.
Reports say the rice “disappeared” along the way and never reached it intended audience, forcing the minister to release documents showing he had dispatched the goods to regional governors since then
But Cameroonians say they are yet to receive the rice, embarrassing Yaounde and raising red flag.
But the rice scandal along with the 21 billion francs CFA which Malachie says has been spent to fight the virus has raised an alarm among many Cameroonians who want to know if the money was not stolen by some officials.
The recent scandals have hurt the gold standard image of the health minister following his exceptional response to the coronavirus pandemic
Dr Malachie was praised by many Cameroonians for his speedy updates about health tips and number of infected cases, a rarity with government officials.
