On Friday, July 3rd, 2020, President Paul Biya signed a decree to raise the retirement age of civil servants in the health sector
According to the decree which was shared on his twitter handle, civil servants in the public health sector who are in category A and B will retire at 60 years while those in category C and D will retire at 55 years
Their retirement ages were 55 and 50 for the different categories respectively
The move experts say is long overdue and will permit Cameroon’s healthcare workers to save more and prepare for a better retirement. It is seen as the government’s gratitude to the health workers for their heroic fight to combat COVID-19
Labor experts also stressed that the move will improve the overall fiscal picture through higher income tax revenues and improved labor market incentives, helping to grow the economy, which benefits everyone.
