In a declaration of warning issued to government today July 19th 2020, opppsition leader Maurice Kamto has reiterated his call to warn the government against organizing any election without prior electoral reforms
The MRC leader says his party will not accept any election, be it Presidential or regional elections if the government fails to institute necessary reforms. He has called on his supporters to stay on alert
In a lengthy bilingual declaration, the 69 year old says ELECAM, AU, EU and other international bodies had emphasized the need for electoral reforms in the country before and insists its time for those reforms
It is not yet clear why Kamto is raising alarms at this hour.
He also used the opportunity to distanced himself from allegations by some regime supporters that he wants to take over power from the streets.
He said “Let it be clear, the MRC does not call for a coup or an armed insurrection, as it does not ask for anyone to offer him power”
He however went ahead to warn government or the risk to organize any elections, saying his party won’t accelerate it.
“I ask the Cameroonian people to stay mobilized, vigilant, and above all to stand ready. I invite him to take ownership in a republican way but with unprecedented determination in our country the following slogan: ′′ Zero election without the end of the civil war in NOSO and the consensual and effective reform of the electoral system “
It is not yet clear how Kamto intends to prevent any future election and government has not declared any intention for early elections.
Kamto has faced criticisms in the past for raising false alarms over potential government actions in the past.
